Lisa Thomas
Manager of Recruitment

Lisa is a human capital leader who is committed to dismantling systems of oppression so that all children can thrive in schools. She leads hiring and onboarding efforts as the Manager of Recruitment at Leading Educators.

Lisa’s “Why”

As a brown skinned, Afro-Latina who attended a predominantly white and affluent private school in New Jersey, Lisa was acutely aware that students that looked like her did not often occupy spaces like her college prep school. After a lot of self-work and critical racial identity development, she realized that she didn’t just have to feel lucky for her education, but could make it her life’s work to ensure that every student, no matter what they looked like, where they lived or how much money their families had, would have access to a high quality, culturally responsive education.

Lisa’s Journey

Prior to joining Leading Educators, Lisa served as the Director of Talent on the South Carolina Regional Team of Teach For America. During her three years at Teach For America, Lisa held a variety of roles in the talent and operations world. Before moving down South, Lisa worked as an Associate Director of Recruitment at Uncommon Schools for 2 years after being promoted from the Recruitment Coordinator Role. She began her career in education support work serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA member at North Star Academy, part of the Uncommon Schools network in Newark, NJ.

Lisa holds a BA in Sociology from The George Washington University. She lives in Goose Creek, South Carolina, and enjoys spending time with family and friends, frequent trips to Folly Beach and listening to really loud music on long car drives.

What Inspires You? I do this work everyday to honor my mother’s legacy. It is because of her that I had the educational opportunities that I did and through her example and love grew up knowing that I could make a difference. We are the Never Give Up Family and I tackle the challenges of our work with a tireless spirit and the  profound knowledge that with determination, love and a little elbow grease, all students can be set up for life long success at any school they attend.

Fun Fact: Lisa can dance salsa, merengue and a little bit of bachata.
