Leading Educators Prepares for CEO Transition

After nearly eight incredible years at Leading Educators, CEO Jonas Chartock has decided to open the door to new leadership this September.

Jonas is proud of all that the Leading Educators community has accomplished, having grown from a single pilot program in New Orleans to becoming an innovative learning and systems design partner of districts in twelve geographic areas.  Under his leadership, educational equity and collaborative teacher practice have become more deeply ingrained in the programmatic approach--shifts that have helped districts reach record student growth. As a new father, Jonas is excited to spend more time with his family and pursue new opportunities tied to his deep passion for racial equity and social justice policy and activism.

We believe the team at Leading Educators is well prepared to build on ten years of collective progress, and we have chosen Chong-Hao Fu as an internal successor who brings both a deep understanding of our programs and strong relationships with leading districts to this effort.  Jonas will continue to serve as CEO through early September. We look forward to re-introducing you to Chong-Hao and our strategic plan in the coming months.

Leading Educators has always been about collective leadership.  We have worked to be a model of the distributed leadership we expect from our school partners, and our culture reflects that nimble, collaborative approach.  As we enter this next chapter of our story, we know we are about to see many decades of districts producing their best teaching and learning yet.

JONAS CHARTOCK TO DEPART AS CEO OF LEADING EDUCATORS, CHONG-HAO FU NAMED SUCCESSOR

Move marks first leadership transition in organization’s 10-year history

 

NEW ORLEANS, LA - May 8, 2018

Jonas Chartock, who joined Leading Educators as the organization’s first CEO in December 2010, will be leaving his role this September.  

Chartock shared, “In more than seven years, we have grown from a small pilot program with aspirations to positively impact the education of every New Orleans’ student to a critical partner to pioneering school systems in twelve regions and influencing so many more.  Our experience in developing professional learning systems has deepened our understanding of what it will take to accomplish real educational equity, and I am so proud of how well-prepared this team is to enter our next chapter.”

Chong-Hao Fu, Leading Educators’ current Chief Learning Officer, has been unanimously chosen by the board of directors as Chartock’s successor.  As Chief Program Officer and Chief Learning Officer, Fu has led innovative shifts in districts’ teacher and school leader development strategies which have produced accelerated growth in student’s math and English language arts knowledge.  Fu has been with Leading Educators for six years and currently manages partnership, district consulting, development, and thought leadership efforts. Before joining Leading Educators, Fu was the founding principal of KIPP Sharpstown in Houston, TX, one of the highest performing schools in the city and one of the few fine arts schools dedicated to serving lower income students.

During the transition, Leading Educators will be launching new programs in Tulsa, Chicago, and New Orleans that will directly serve approximately 215 new teacher and school leaders.  Partnership teams worked with 730 teacher leaders nationwide in the most recent academic year, influencing 2,920 peer teachers and 73,000 K-12 students.

As a new father, Chartock is excited to spend more time with his family and pursue new opportunities tied to his deep passion for racial and education equity and social justice policy and activism.

What do Lady Gaga, two former U.S. presidents, the Duke of York, the “Oracle of Omaha” and Oprah all have in common? They have all been named as the top influential do-gooders in the world, right alongside Leading Educators’ Chief Executive Officer, Jonas Chartock.

Digital media platform Richtopia released its list of the Top 200 Most Influential Do-Gooders in the World. Richtopia, which espouses equity-driven business practices and environmentally conscious endeavors, based their selections on social capital and influence, not merely net worth. Weighing metrics from sources such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Wikipedia, LinkedIn and Instagram, plus their own “secret sauce,” candidates are chosen for their continual drive to leverage social media for social good.

Chartock is taking the praise with his usual humility, both surprised and honored to be included, but observing that he was slotted at #153 - placing him just behind World Wrestling Entertainment’s (WWE) Stephanie McMahon. Call us optimists, but we can’t help but note that’s also one slot *above* one of the biggest names in online marketing, Seth Godwin.

A Classroom Without a Woman?

We at Leading Educators are bound by the core belief that all children deserve a high quality education. We believe that through investments in teacher leadership based on rigorous content, anti-bias education and a strong culture of learning, we can create equitable schools that yield students who are college and career ready.

Central to preparing young people for successful lives and careers is the role of the teacher. Knowing how critical teachers are to our society and to the life prospects of our students, we believe it is important to take time to recognize the historical and current role of women in cultivating and leading the future of our country. Across the world earlier this week, communities recognized International Women’s Day and participated in A Day Without A Woman - a movement encouraging women and their allies to mark the day by uniting in economic protest, wearing red, refraining from making purchases (except from small, minority or women-owned businesses) and in some cases, staying home from their jobs. Organizers sought to draw attention to the essential role of women in the workforce, as well as important policies such as equal pay and paid family leave, inciting global grassroots gains towards justice and human rights.

Teaching, like nursing, social work, and many service industries, is largely a female-dominated profession. According to 2012 statistics, nearly 76% of all teachers in this country are female; however, it is worth noting that women are drastically underrepresented in leadership roles - occupying a mere 27% of district superintendent slots.

Many of these teachers - like women across the country and across the globe - marked "A Day Without A Woman" by staying out of schools and classrooms. Some criticism was leveled against the observance, as some school districts closed in anticipation of insufficient staff to cover such significant absences. This raises a tension that is particularly relevant to our work. Leading Educators partners with some of the most underserved, high-risk student populations, and we are acutely aware of the loss of valuable learning time. We also believe that students learn a great deal by watching how adults in their lives model the values they espouse.  

At Leading Educators, equity and community are among our core values. We invest our energies in fighting systemic injustice through community engagement. With a staff that is nearly two-thirds female, the long- and short-term impact of “A Day Without a Woman” is at the forefront of our minds. In a letter to our staff, CEO Jonas Chartock said, “Whether [Leading Educators’ employees] should choose to take the day off in protest, wear red, or abstain altogether, we recognize that we would not be the organization we are without the labor and leadership of women.”

On International Women’s Day and all days, Leading Educators recognizes and appreciates the essential labor and leadership of women, and salutes their essential role in building the leaders of tomorrow.

Dear Leading Educators Community,

As you know, this time of year is commonly referred to as the “Season of Giving,” and we are often reminded that “it is better to give than to receive,” but I have to tell you...2016 has given us some pretty amazing gifts.

This year saw the return of our Leading Educators Institute, where over 200 educators from across the country gathered for four days to grow and refine their teacher leadership practice. It saw the official launch of our LEAP programming in all 115 Washington, DC public schools - the first time we have grown our reach to an entire district. We have begun preparations to roll out our expansion to Grand Rapids, Michigan, and we closed out the year with what is perhaps the biggest gift we could hope for, an Investing in Innovation grant from the Department of Education that will allow us to begin a four-year initiative to develop teacher leaders across the greater Chicago area.

The close of 2016 also finds us overflowing with gratitude for the 814 teachers currently in our Fellowship, the 6,500 teaching colleagues whom they support, and most importantly, the more than 180,000 students that these teachers serve every day. Thanks to your interest and engagement in our work, we are one step closer to realizing our vision of “Great Schools for all students.”  You touch our lives; you touch our hearts, and we are truly grateful.

Leading Educators Scores $3 Million Win For Chicago Schools

Leading Educators receives $3 Million federal grant for teacher leadership development in Chicago

NEW ORLEANS, LA -  November 14, 2016

Leading Educators has been awarded a $3 million Investing in Innovation (i3) grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support the instructional leadership development of teacher leaders across the Chicago metro area over the next four years.

Among one of the “highest-rated” applicants, Leading Educators’ proposed Chicago Common Core Collaborative would expand the implementation of innovative practices shown to have an impact on improving student achievement or student growth, closing the achievement gap, decreasing dropout rates, and increasing high school graduation, college enrollment and completion. The i3 funds would allow Leading Educators to work with Chicago principals and teacher leaders to create systemic cycles of standards-aligned professional learning.

“The Chicago Collaborative could represent an unprecedented leap forward in our quest to ensure great schools for all students,” said Jonas Chartock, Chief Executive Officer of Leading Educators. “We believe that a refined model of teacher leadership, with job-embedded, standards-aligned professional learning, working in concert with school administrators, is our strongest tool to ensure college and career readiness for all students, regardless of their background.”

As an i3 awardee, Leading Educators would be poised to continue working with school, district, and philanthropic partners to identify, document, and implement best practices in Chicago and other districts focused on teacher leadership and instructional improvement.

“Leading Educators has learned a great deal about implementing successful teacher leadership initiatives in partnership with school districts and charter schools across the country over the past five years,” said Jay Altman, Chairman of the Leading Educators board. “Their success in helping spread teacher leadership and in facilitating high-performing teams has been inspiring.  Leading Educators’ LEAP partnership with the District of Columbia public schools was pioneering, and I am confident that this new initiative in Chicago has the potential to be equally transformative.”

It is estimated that by project’s end, at least 75% of the teacher leaders who participate in the Collaborative will remain in their communities, serving more than 21,000 students.
